About the wearable Work:
Each piece is handmade and unique. Polymer clay, silver and recycled materials are used to create each original work making them one of a kind. Even single earrings are different from one another! I hand paint, draw, carve, and create each mini art work to be worn.
Polymer clay was introduced into my creations because of the range of colors and playfulness of the material. When I started using Fimo (Polymer Clay), I had also been making art works in pottery clay. These materials allow me to create little mini sculptures on a small scale.
Background
About the artist:
Rebecca Olsen, was born in Italy to American artists where she currently resides. Raised between Texas and Italy, Olsen is used to challenging boundries. “I have never felt I was totally American or Italian. I always felt like I was in this in-between space, where I could take and leave the things about each culture. I think these wearable works are a bit like me. Living somewhere between art and design.”
In my artistic research, I work from the city, architecture, making use of line, form, geometry and texture and a personal color aesthetic to created layered paintings, prints, sculptures and video. My works talk of what it means to be a finite being in an infinite world. This new project of wearable art is an extension of my art practice. A project existing in the space between art and design.
Recycled Materials:
Leather pieces are made from recycled leather scraps from Italian leather market shops. I hand paint the leather, draw and cut each earrings using small hand-held tools. I incorporated silver as I liked the contrast of the silver and the leather. The playfulness of the dangling silver objects over the hand drawn and carved leather gives me infinite inspiration.
Bike tires, yoga matts, used poker chips, rope, plumbing hardware and other materials are all found in various forms in these pieces. The results are spontaneous, fun and play with the contrast of common materials used to create something usually associated with luxury and beauty.
